Dear Sarah
and psci-com
I'd be interested to hear what's out there too - for what I hope are
obvious reasons!
There is/was a science book club in London, but it doesn't seem to have
had much activity of late:
http://sciencebookclub.blogspot.com/
They did an "all read the same book" approach. There's also a group in
the North East that uses a mixed book approach. As far as I understand
it, everyone agrees to read a book of their choosing on a particular
theme (eg origins of the universe) and then in the book club discuss
both the science and the literary merits of the different books.
Some universities, especially in the USA have science-based reading
groups, but I'm not sure how fun they are - they seem to be for the
informal study of academic texts to aid students broader understanding
of their topic. This is an online email bookclub:

A few popular science books have reading club notes published online or
in the back of the book to help book clubs in their discussions. The
paperback of Richard Fortey's "The Earth", for example has a "PS"
section, which could be useful for reading groups.
You could think of our Junior Judging Panels as a form of reading group
for young people - albeit one with a limited timescale. We'll be
publishing our judging pack online soon, with reading guides for the
books, which could be used in any situation (and if you or anyone else
has a group of young people interested in taking part, apply today!

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Science Book Club
Dear All,
We have just started running a science book club at our venue, Science
Oxford. Science Oxford is a cultural centre for science in Oxford, where
we
run science events for the general public, with an emphasis on using a
variety of approaches to engage people in science, for example science
comedy, dance and drama. The aim of our science book club is provide
another
forum to discuss science and its position in society and literature.
Within the book club we are experimenting with different formats and
topics
etc and were wondering if any list members had any experience of running
or
attending science book clubs which they could share?
If anyone would like to know more about our science book club please
contact
us (details below) or visit www.oxtrust.org.uk/whatson/
Thanks in advance,
Best wishes,
Sarah Richardson
