A Wales Gene Park and Techniquest event:
Public Discussion: Should we worry about 'Designer Babies'?
WEDNESDAY 21 MARCH 2007
6PM - 7.30PM
TECHNIQUEST, CARDIFF BAY
Due to advances in science, it is now possible for parents to select a child with specific genetic
characteristics.
Scientists can screen for genes for serious disorders and susceptability to certain cancers. They
can screen for genes so a child can be a tissue match for an older, ill sibling.
But this process (known as PGD - pre-implantation genetic diagnosis) raises controversial issues.
Could this be the start of a slippery slope?
Speakers:
Dr Andrea Edwards - University Hospital of Wales
Dr Annie Procter - All Wales Medical Genetics Service
Josephine Quintavalle - Comment on Reproductive Ethics (CORE)
