What can I say? I tried to read Stephen King once. The horror! the horror!.
For about five years beginning at age eight I was never without a
selected Poe on my person. I read Dracula when I was twelve, fell
asleep when I'd finished it, and awoke from a terrifying dream--I was
being pursued by wolves, and a great weight made it hard to breath. I
opened my eyes to the wolf-like muzzle of my German Shepherd, who was
perched on my chest, his teeth gleaming in the light from the street.
I gave out an enormous shriek. Teddy (the dog) never slept in my room again.
