Ann I said most GP's and I would imagine, and I was referring to GP's with
an OH speciality as I thought was clear. I think Stephanie summed it up, it
is a team approach.

I have to disagree with your premise that a GP is in a good position to run
an OH service. Being a good GP does not equate with having business acumen
nor of being able to give effective or relevant OH advice. I am sure I am
not alone in having encountered some GPs who do not hold an OH qualification
who are employed as part time company medical advisors and give totally
inappropriate OH advice.
I am lucky to have an excellent and extremely gifted GP who holds MRCP,
MRCGP and FRCS. I would be very happy to consult him for an (ill)-health
related issue. However, what he knows about OH or running an OH service
could be written on the back of a postage stamp leaving sufficient room for
his signature.
One of my past OHN students regularly has an annual turnover in excess of a
quarter of a million pounds! She could sell snow to Eskimos very
effectively. I know of some doctors who have been employed as GPs and have
no idea of business and marketing. Most know little about occupational
health as that is not currently included in their education for practice. My
husband is a Director of an internationally famous architectural practice.
I would not recommend that he manages an OH service.
Having been a GP does not necessarily mean that they have better business
acumen or OH knowledge than a nurse. Some are not partners in the business
and therefore its management is not in their remit.
