Dear all
When talking about managing an OH service (or any other professional
service probably), for me, there are a few key requirements:
1) Clarity of vision of what your service needs to achieve for the
business that employs it
2) The ability to communicate and deliver that vision
3) People management
4) Knowledge of your subject.
I would therefore echo Jeremy's comment of a few days ago. The best
person to run a service is the best manager regardless of their
professional background. Nursing and medicine are distinct professions -
as is management. Management isn't simply something you are good at just
because of a particular professional background.

Interesting. I suppose it depends on the doctor or the nurse and the
service being offered. I think we should be equally able to run a
service, should being the operative word. As for running an OH
business, I would imagine that most doctors would have an advantage as
most OHP's have come from GP practice and what it takes to run them. I
can hear all the nurses screaming now, calm down, I run my own business
and I am a nurse. Both parties are obviously biased though I can vouch
that both are in my experience better than a safety led service. At
least we have an understanding of each others professional requisites.
Regards
Frank

May i politely suggest this forum is slightly biased as mainly nurses on
it. If you want the answer doctor led or a list of reasons why doctors
can run the service better - put it on ALAMA or ANHOPS websites.
Funnily enough my personal opinion is it should be DOCTOR led.....
but then i'm a doctor!
