Oh well, my twopenneth
I am on the side of it being a management issue. If we saw every
employee who had a physical presentation that may just be due to a
health problem not related to work we would do nothing else but:
1) screen our employees with bad fashion for colour blindness
2) send everyone with a headache for a brain CT
3) people with BO would be tested for drugs/ alcohol or referred for
psychological testing
4) Anyone having a bad day would be sent for counselling etc
Managers are in a great position to have an adult conversation with
their employees about the issue. Employees are in a good position to
make a decision to disclose a health issue that may be related to
halitosis or request an Occ Health referral or to do something about it
eg see their GP/ dentist.
There we are ;)

I disagree that any issue relating to body odour etc is strictly a
management issue, there may be an underlying medical cause resulting in
the problem, surely its better that the individual is seen by an
occupational health professional so that any underlying cause can be
identified.
Otherwise the individual may take on board the fact that there is
odour
take steps in terms of disguising it but not actually have the problem
investigated.

I don't see this as an Occupational Health Issue unless her work is
causing it, anymore than other personal hygiene issues. I.e. body
odour,
greasy hair. This is a management issue.
Management often see anything to do with 'bodies' as being the 'nurses
area of responsibility', but I do not prescribe to that assumption.
However others may disagree with me.
Food handlers have an expected level of personal hygiene that they are
expected to adhere to, if they don't it is a management responsibility
to deal with not OH.
Pass it back where it belongs

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Halitosis
Dear All
I have a situation where I have been approached by management to talk
to
a female employee regarding the smell of her breath. They explained
that
there has been many complaints from other employees and customers
alike
regarding this problem.
Does anybody out there have any suggestions haow this subject could be
approached with this employee in a tactful and delicate way, without
causing offence.
Kind Regards
