Hi Alana,
are you sure about wood work teachers? Their exposure to wood dust may be well below the WEL and insufficient for surveillance. I was involved with a client in higher education where the lecturers previously had surveillance but had insignificant exposure and the risk assessment showed that no surveillance was required.
Again this is one of those areas where a good risk assessment is necessary eg look at the species of tree, type of work process i.e. will it generate inhalable/ respirable particles or large shavings and so on.. I do not believe that just because someone is exposed to a tiny amount of something that is known to be harmful in huge amounts that surveillance is always necessary.

Hi Everyone,
Would like to ask (and this is within Local Authority only) who do you
target for respiratory sensitisers health surveillance.
We have thought of the obvious i.e. wood work teachers (wood dust) and
school cooks (flour).
Would be grateful if anybody knows of any of those not so obvious ones.
Thanks in anticipation
Alana Otway
