Joint UCL CCLRC BioMed Network PhD studentship
A three year fully funded joint UCL-CCLRC-Bionet Ph.D. studentship is available to investigate the potential of RAMAN spectroscopy as a novel approach to the determination of bone quality. This is a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary research spanning physics, chemistry, clinical and biomedical sciences between three world-leading teams. The goal is to tackle a major challenge of biomedical sciences: to provide a method for non-invasive assessment of diseased bones that would measure both the mineral and organic phases of bone. This is not currently possible with conventional techniques. This proposal is based around novel Raman spectroscopic approaches demonstrated to be capable of recovering Raman signals from deep layers of tissue. This studentship will contribute to a larger programme of work developing Raman spectroscopy of skeletal tissues for use in the clinic. Research training will be provided in a wide range of disciplines related to both physical and life sciences, together with a unique opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary team involving interaction between Centres of Academic Excellence.
The student will be registered through UCL, London's Global University. Some basic programming skills will be required to perform numerical simulations and data analysis, a graduate in chemistry or physics with a minimum of an upper second class honours degree would be preferred. Comprehensive support and supervision will be jointly provided by Professor Allen Goodship, Professor Anthony Parker, Dr Edward Draper and Dr Pavel Matousek. A stipend of £14,000 per annum, plus UK/EU fees only and annual increments will be provided; a small fund is also available to attend international and national conferences. Only those eligible for EU/UK fees need apply. Please send a complete CV with two references to [log in to unmask] or Ms. J. Buckland, IOMS, UCL, Brockley Hill, Stanmore. Middlesex. HA7 4LP.
Closing date TBD, unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.
