Ämne: [M-R] saints of the day 15. February
medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Yesterday (15. February) was also the feast day of:
Saint Sigfrid, who according to his legend was an Archbishop of York ca. 1000, who went as a pilgrim to pagan Sweden at the request of the Swedish King Olof Skötkonung, subsequently baptized by Sigfrid. Sigfrid was also the founder of the church of Växjö in Småland, where his grave (now lost) was visited by pilgrims until the Reformation, and where a market is to my knowledge still held on his feast day. His legend is one of the most elaborate in Scandinavian hagiography and exists in several versions created for different Swedish dioceses. With the exception of Saint Olaf and Saint Birgitta, Sigfrid was one of the most universally celebrated saints in medieval Scandinavia, and his feast day is included in the Late Medieval printed Breviaries from the Swedish, Norwegian, and parts of the Danish ecclesiastical provinces.
Best,
Anders Fröjmark
