The TRANSLATION RESEARCH SUMMER SCHOOL (TRSS), a joint initiative of three
British universities, organizes an annual two-week course offering
intensive research training in translation and intercultural studies for
prospective researchers in the field.
The units collaborating in the Summer School are the Centre for
Translation and Intercultural Studies at the University of Manchester, the
Centre for Intercultural Studies at University College London (UCL), and
the Translation Studies Graduate Programme, School of Literatures,
Languages and Cultures, University of Edinburgh.
The 2007 session will run from Monday 18 to Friday 29 June at University
College London (UCL).

2007 Invited Speaker
The invited speaker for the 2007 Summer School is Professor Lawrence
Venuti (Temple University, USA). Professor Venuti is the author of The
Translator's Invisibility (1995) and The Scandals of Translation (1998)
and the editor of The Translation Studies Reader (second edition 2004). He
will give a public lecture at UCL on Thursday 28 June and conduct a
seminar with Summer School students on the same day.
Eligibility
The Summer School is open to suitably qualified students from across the
world.
Candidates should normally hold the degree of Master of Arts or equivalent
in a relevant subject (typically a humanities subject involving
crosscultural studies), should be proficient in English and should either
have started or be actively considering research in translation and/or
intercultural studies.
The term ‘translation studies’ covers all branches of the academic study
of translation and interpreting. ‘Intercultural studies’ covers any form
of communication across cultural boundaries.
Registration
A maximum of around thirty participants can be admitted to each Summer
School. Together with thier registration forms candidates are requested to
provide (1) a curriculum vitae and (2) a statement of purpose.
The deadline for receipt of applications for the 2007 session is 30 April.
Fee
The fee for the Summer School is £975. It covers access to library and
computer facilities as well as tuition, course materials and refreshments.
It does not cover travel, accommodation or meals.
A fees discount of 30% is available to self-funded students, who pay £ 680.
Assessment
Assessment is based on an oral presentation in the second week of the
course and the submission of a detailed research proposal of some 3000 to
5000 words within two months after the end of the Summer School. For the
2006 session the research proposal submission date is 15 September.
Certificates
Certificates of attendance are issued at the end of the course.
Formal ‘Pass’ certificates confirming successful completion of the Summer
School are issued when all assessed work has been delivered and approved.
