CONFERENCE
TO SIR WITH LOVE
Thursday 22 February, 2007
4.30 pm – 6.30 pm
Room 828
This event offers a rare opportunity to engage in dialogue with E R Braithwaite, the author of one of the best known accounts of learning to become a secondary school teacher ever published in English. Professor Braithwaite will be warmly welcomed to the Institute of Education by Professor Michael Fielding. The conference will cover the background and context of the writing of To Sir with Love, and then Professor Braithwaite will discuss some key extracts from the book. Participants will then have the opportunity to engage in dialogue with this world-famous author, pioneer and UN representative. The conference will also enable Professor Fielding, who is currently setting up a Centre for Radical Secondary School Renewal, the opportunity to briefly discuss the school where E. R. Braithwaite taught - St George-in-the East Secondary School, Stepney, London. It was the most radical secondary school we have ever seen in England and its head teacher, Alex Bloom, one of our greatest educational pioneers.
Tickets £20 / £15 for students and Institute of Education staff. For further information, or if you would like to attend this conference, please contact Sarah Wishart on 020 7612 6565 or via email [log in to unmask]
