I recently stumbled across the OpenOffice Bibliographic project (OOoBib) -
http://bibliographic.openoffice.org/
Its aim is to "make it easier for people to store and manage their reference data, to format their documents, and to collaborate with other users. It will be simple to use for the casual user, but will meet all the requirements of the professional and academic writer."
In other words, if it is successful then OOoBib will let you consign EndNote and RefMan to the digital dustbin.
It's very early days for the project so I guess we shouldn't hold our breath.
I wonder whether we will see convergence between OOoBib and ePrints? The latest version of ePrints seems to be moving closer to the bibliographic reference database world, with various new features.

I'd be interested in comments from people who know about these things.
