The University of Chicago Press, Journals Division hires Publications Director,
Business Development Director

Publications Director, Deborah L. McBride

February 2007—Deborah L. McBride has joined the Journals Division at the
University of Chicago Press. In the newly created position of Publications
Director, Debbie will oversee the performance of the University of Chicago
Press’s portfolio of journals and manage ongoing relationships with publishing
partners.

“We are very pleased to welcome Debbie to the Journals Division. Her depth of
knowledge about scholarly publishing and about the practices, expectations, and
needs of our clients and partners will be a tremendous asset to the management
team,” said Nawin Gupta, Journals Division Manager at the University of Chicago
Press.

Prior to joining the University of Chicago Press, Debbie was Director of
Publications at the Society of Critical Care Medicine for six years. She served
as Publisher for the American Dietetic Association for thirteen years and has
also held positions at P.M. Haeger and Associates, the Emergency Department
Nurses Association, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Year Book
Medical Publishers, Publishers Weekly, the American Society of Association
Executives, the Association Forum of Chicagoland, Chicago Women in Publishing,
Chicago Book Clinic, and the Northwestern University alumni office.

Business Development Director, Mary Summerfield

February 2007—Mary Summerfield recently was appointed Business Development
Director for the University of Chicago Press, Journals Division. Mary will
oversee development of publishing partnerships and publications for the
Journals Division.

“Mary has valuable experience and insight from her years with the University of
Chicago Press – experience that will help steer the Journals Division as we
continue to strengthen and forge relationships with partners in the publishing
community,” said Nawin Gupta, Journals Division Manager at the University of
Chicago Press.

For six years, Mary held a similar role for the Press as a whole and spearheaded
the launch of the Chicago Digital Distribution Center and BiblioVault
repository. For eight years, she worked with Columbia University in development
and deployment of scholarly communications programs.  Previously she held
business development positions in multinational media, including at CBS, Inc.
Prior to earning an MBA at Columbia, she was a business economist.
