Colleagues
We are very pleased to report that the new FG5 Absolute Gravimeter at the SGF Herstmonceux is now operational. Following a commissioning period during the last year, since November 2006 the instrument has been making weekly, 24 hr continuous observation runs centred on mid-GPS week. The resulting mean weekly values of g have standard errors of around two micro-Gal, equivalent to around 10 mm in vertical displacement.
There is space in the basement to set up a further three instruments over precise markers for inter-comparison purposes.
We are particularly grateful to Ordnance Survey for levelling the four ground markers into our local survey network, which includes of course the GNSS, laser and groundwater systems.
Our weekly runs are intended to generate a baseline series, to complement local GNSS and SLR vertical coordinate solutions, but many other applications will be possible. The community is welcome to contact us informally to discuss potential new proposals.
