Dear European Social Policy List Colleagues,
See the initiative below. It would be good if colleagues working in
the fields of EU social policy, employment, labour issues and the
social dimension of integration in general, made nominations, as this
would additionally serve to raise the profile of research in these
areas among the UACES and European Studies community.

Politics, International Relations & European Studies, Loughborough

Apologies for cross posting
** EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT TO ADDRESS EUSA MONTREAL AND REFLECT
ON THE STATE OF EU SCHOLARSHIP **
I write to alert colleagues of a neat initiative designed to link the
past work of President José Manuel Barroso as an academic to his
current work as President of the European Commission. It arises from
research underway within the EU-Consent Network of Excellence (funded
through the EU’s Framework VI programme).
We are asking for the input of ALL members (globally) of the EU
studies academic community to help make this initiative a success.
President Barroso has agreed to read and reflect on 5 selected pieces
of academic work on European integration. His reflections will be
solicited in an interview to be conducted by members of the EU-
Consent research team during summer 2007. The interview will be
published (partially or in full) in EUSA Review, UACES News, European
Political Science, and on the EU-Consent web-site in autumn 2007.
To preview this initiative, President Barroso will address the EUSA
biennial conference in Montreal at the conference banquet on 18 May
2007.
WE WILL BE COMPILING PRESIDENT BARROSO’S ‘READING LIST’ ON THE BASIS
OF AN OPEN POLL OF EU ACADEMICS. We ask you both to participate and
help us ‘get out the vote’. Here are the parameters:
• Any colleague with an identifiable academic or research institute
email address can vote once (and once only) for the 5 pieces of
published academic work (published in 1997 or later) on the EU that
they consider the most important, essential, seminal.
• The only way to cast a vote is to send an email to
[log in to unmask] . All valid votes must list the voter’s name and
institutional affiliation. Works may be nominated in any European
language.
• All nominated publications must be short – article or chapter-
length – and all must have an abstract.
• No colleague may nominate any work that they have authored or co-
authored.
• The 5 publications nominated by each colleague should not be ranked.
The nomination of more than 5 constitutes a ‘spoiled ballot’.
• The ‘polls will be open’ until 1700 UK time on 16 March 2007.
• The results of the poll will be revealed just prior to President
Barroso’s address to the EUSA conference banquet in Montreal.
• Any queries may be addressed to [log in to unmask] .
