EPSRC PhD Studentship
Sustainable city regions
The Martin Centre, Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge, UK
The growth of world city regions due to rapid urbanization and more
affluent lifestyles is a challenge to sustainability targets. The Martin
Centre is leading the SOLUTIONS research project that aims to understand
the extent to which land use and transport planning can help cities grow
in a more sustainable way. We also aim to continue this line of research
to study the sustainability of cities in a holistic and integrated way
across a wide range of environmental, natural resources and socio-economic
impacts. For further information see, www.suburbansolutions.ac.uk
We invite applications for an EPSRC-funded PhD studentship. The topic can
be chosen by the student as long as it is related to the general subject
area of the SOLUTIONS project and the sustainability of city regions. We
can also advise on suitable topics if applicants would like further
guidance. Our main stipulation is that the research should be related to
the theory of land use and transport models.
The student will be supervised by Professor Echenique, a world renowned
authority on land use and transport. Applicants should be numerate with an
interest in the built environment.
Applicants should have, or expect to be awarded, a good first degree or
master’s degree. The studentship will cover tuition fees and a tax-free
maintenance stipend of £12,300 per annum (for three years) if the
successful applicant can demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK
(usually through being ordinarily resident in the UK for the past three
years) and has indefinite leave to remain, and EU nationals that have been
in the UK for three years in full-time education. Other EU applicants are
eligible for tuition fees only.
To apply, please write to Professor Marcial Echenique at the address below
with a covering letter enclosing the pre-application form that can be
downloaded from the website.
