Hi people,
While putting together a tentative suggestion for a piece of research on
the Disability Equality Duty, my other half and I have come up with a
new term.
Wondering about it's utility, and whether we're reinventing the wheel,
we'd like to ask your opinions about it.
The term is an existing one - 'D'oh' - but we're using it as a noun to
describe the situation when people make adaptations without actually
consulting people or thinking it through properly.
Thus, we get D'oh culture, which is the institutional culture leading to
instances of d'oh, similarly d'ohism (similar pronunciation to taoism)
and d'ohistic.
To give an example of how this came about, my other half is in a shared
office at a UK university. Knowing he has a hearing impairment (among
other issues), the university arranged to fit a flashing doorbell to the
office.
This hasn't been done yet. When he inquired about this, he found they
had been sending workmen to the office during his office hours - who had
been knocking (no answer) and they had been going away again. D'oh!
