Sarah,
Welcome! :-)
I think it is worth highlighting that both these activities are
developing application profiles - the former starting from a LOM view of
the world and constructing a DC application profile based on that, the
latter starting from a more 'traditional' DC view of the world.
We therefore need to try and ensure some level of joinup between the two
activities. (Note: I speak as someone who is equally guilty as anyone
else, possibly moreso, for the lack of join-up so far!)
In the case of the DC-Ed Application Profile I would strongly urge this
group to start by thinking about an 'application model' of the entities
that need to be described and the key relationships between them. By
doing this it will become clearer which properties relate to which
entities.
For an example of how to do this, see the Eprints Application Profile
Wiki at UKOLN, particularly the model page:
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/repositories/digirep/index/Eprints_Application_Pr
ofile
and
http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/repositories/digirep/index/Model
We don't really need to undertake this step when starting from LOM,
because LOM essentially provides the underlying model of the world.
Andy
