Hi Liddy,
Thanks for your comments (in this and your subsequent email) re
accessibility and education. In the spirit of trying to advance
discussion on this, I will ramble a bit below.. obviously we don't have
the solutions in the DC-Ed community any more than anyone else does, but
I have a few thoughts.
We are working on what we are calling a "thin" or modular application
profile that only relates to describing the educational aspects or uses
of a resource. In other words our application profile does not cover
those aspects of resources that are covered elsewhere by DCMI (or indeed
any other metadata community)- it is intended to be used with or plugged
into other APs. This is an approach that has long been discussed as a
way forward in the LOM community for dealing with all the different
kinds of metadata, so it's good to be finally exploring a way of doing
it. I think how accessibility metadata relates to other metadata is a
good use case for this way of developing APs. Is there a modular
accessibility AP under development, or any work similar that we can
refer to?
So a question I have is: are there any education-specific accessibility
properties or attributes of resources that we need to look at in this
AP? For instance, do we need vocabularies for learning resource type or
instructional method that in some way describe accessibility features?
For instance, particular instructional methods to accommodate different
cognitive styles or abilities, etc. I am co-ordinating the task of
identifying vocabularies for the DC-Ed AP, so I would be interested to
hear of any work in this area, or get any feedback from those with more
experience in this area.
If it looks as though there is a lot of work needed around this above
what we have agreed to do before the next DCMI Conference, we can table
it for discussion then- in the meantime I'm happy to gather stuff.
Best
Sarah
