In fact, I have just returned home after I have been away for a few days
and I have received the same letter (presumably) from the Electoral
Commission.

I received an Electoral Registration form previously from my new Council as
a result of informing them that I had moved in. You will recall that having
accepted that I had moved here for Council Tax purposes when I submitted the
Electoral Registration Form they required further evidence that I lived
here. I sent a copy of my mortgage offer - not presumably a cast iron
guarantee that I was living here eg if I was renting out.

I am already on the Electoral Register at my new address - there is a
by-election here and I have received a polling card - so it is not clear to
me that it is from my new Council - and why would they have issued my name
to the Electoral Commission if they carry out the function themselves.

Anyway to get back to the point, I did inform my previous Council that I was
moving - to obtain a refund on my Council Tax - and I would have told them
my new address.

Interestingly I have not been removed from the Register there because I have
had a number of letters from them asking me to confirm that I wish to
continue to receive a postal vote there.

Naturally I cannot comment on the fact that they were using your maiden
name - but on balance I think that if people have moved in to a property
they should be put in touch with local services - and this includes
presumably the right to vote.

I think that what they should do is inform the recipient how they have
obtained the recipient's name.

As I said in my earlier post, when I contacted them about the difficulty
that was being put in my path to registering they weren't prepared to
express an opinion about my specific case.

I managed to get that changed through the normal democratic channels.

This was because I used to be active politically and I knew then one of the
now senior Councillors. Not really the way that it should be done...

They hadn't even advised the Council that they were doing this and only
put the wrong telephone number for contacting the ERO on the letter.
The EROs are logging all complaints and giving the EC feedback.
Yes, you're right Nick - the only purposes they are notified for is
Staff Administration, Accounts & Records and Accounting & Auditing...or
are they above the law because they make the rules.

Can anyone see where on the Electoral Commission website it says that
they actually contact electors or potential electors in this way?

When I recently contacted the Electoral Commission regarding the way
that my electoral registration was dealt with having recently moved into
a new area, they provided general advice but wouldn't comment on the
actions/interpretation of the particular council.

(I might add that my complaint through a local councillor has resulted
in the Council changing their procedures. And, no, I cannot guarantee
that. That is what the councillor has been told. Only a new elector
once, so there is no way of knowing).
