Climate Care use these figures for offsetting, which I believe are from
DEFRA:
Train 0.04 kg CO2/passenger km
Coach 0.04 kg CO2/passenger km
Boat miles 0.002 kg CO2/passenger km
The Tyndall Centre figures, which are more reliable, have higher values for
rail and bus (although I guess bus and coach may not be like with like, see
here - note these are in miles, multiply by 0.625 to get g/km
www.green-office.org.uk/audit.php?goingto=factsheet7
A complicating factor for rail travel in Europe is that as soon as your
train starts using French energy the g/km drops because the bulk of it is
coming from nuclear power. DEFRA figures for “brown” electricity (produced
from the blend of coal, gas, nuclear and renewable energy typically used in
the UK) is 0.43kg carbon per KWh, nuclear's going to be a fair bit lower.

Subject: Re: Travel to Barcelona
naively i thought travelling via train, boat and coach, to see my friend in
norway was fine, without undertaking any estimate of ship's emissions, or
total emissions versus emissions from flying.
i still don't know whether it is better, but haven't travelled anywhere in
the past two years that is not reachable by train. I just assumed one form
of travel was better than the other. It's apity there isn't more info to
guide these decisions available publicly.
but for the remainder of the time, when we don't travel to see our friends
in far off places, we do have phone, email, webcams, letters, sms, msm......
it may not be the same, but can we pick and choose?
