Try Python with scipy/pylab/matplotlib. It comes with a full library
of numerical routines, and offers a graphing interface that emulates
Matlab's. Plus, the language has fewer idiosyncrasies and is more
useful to learn. And C/C++/FORTRAN programs can be called relatively
easily from Python.
