KorteQ PhD Studentship in Knowledge Management at Oxford University Computing Laboratory and University College, Oxford
KorteQ (http//www.korteq.com) in partnership with University College, Oxford and the Centre for Requirements, Oxford University Computing Laboratory (http://web.comlab.ox.ac.uk/oucl/), is offering a fully funded PhD position in the area of Knowledge Management. This partnership has been formed in order to enrich and develop knowledge management practices for the benefit of a generation that is eager to learn, yet faces an overwhelming proliferation of information sources. The successful candidate will explore how research and industry may benefit from more systematic methods, tools and techniques in order to understand, capture and build upon past experience and to make sense of the organisational activities and processes in which this experience is embedded. The student will also benefit from working closely with researchers from the Oxford e-Research Centre (http://www.oerc.ox.ac.uk/), the Oxford Internet Institute (http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/) and the eHorizons Institute (http://www.e-horizons.ox.ac.uk/).
The studentship is fully funded at home/eu level for three years from October 2007. It includes a stipend of £12,600 p.a. There is also some provision for travel to conferences.
Selection Criteria
Candidates must satisfy the usual requirements for doing a doctorate at Oxford see http://web.comlab.ox.ac.uk/oucl/prospective/dphil/
Essential
The candidate is expected to have
· A wide range of interests spanning social aspects of collaborative working as well as technical skills i.e. software architecture and digital libraries.
· Good interpersonal skills. The student will spend considerable time in researching KM needs through discussion and interviews with senior public/private sector executives in end user environments. The student will also be expected to prototype the application of theories, findings and emergent technologies in collaboration with users.
· Ability to work effectively as part of a professional team
· Ability to disseminate results of research to a variety of audiences through written and oral presentations.
And be:
· Prepared to travel to various organisations' locations
In addition the candidate should have an interest in :
· Understanding organisational learning in relation to the ageing workforce and how tacit knowledge and collaborative decision making may be understood, captured, and supported for future activities and generations - particularly in highly complex and sensitive domains
· Developing "next generation" knowledge management practice, combining Requirements Engineering techniques with KorteQ's practical methodologies
· Developing practical approaches for eliciting and representing tacit knowledge and practices in complex organisations
· Exploring video-based elicitation techniques and tacit practices
