A conference to mark the 96th anniversary of International Women’s Day
Saturday 10th March 2007
Aston University, Birmingham
International Women’s Day (IWD), marking the centuries-old struggle of
women for equality and emancipation, is approaching its 96th anniversary.
The women’s movement has a record of extraordinary achievements,
contributing greatly to the improvement of women’s status and visibility in
many areas from which they were once excluded. Today, in countries like the
UK, women play a significant role in many domains of public life and hold
key positions across sectors and institutions. However, this does not mean
that true equality has been achieved. In terms both of representation and
status, much work remains to be done, particularly with respect to
increasing the number of women in senior positions and leadership roles.
Women are underrepresented in politics, business and the law; they earn
less than their male counterparts; and they are victims of violence and
gender-based discrimination.
This conference has two aims. We shall be celebrating the historical
importance of IWD by highlighting the achievements of the women’s movement.
But at the same time, we want to take the opportunity to address a range of
issues that severely impinge on women’s status, work and private life. The
conference is intended as an interdisciplinary and inclusive event. It
brings together women scholars and activists from a variety of backgrounds
and professions. Do join us.
The conference will be held in the Warwick Lecture Theatre, Main Building.
