Dear All
Keele has receivied the same responses encountering the same difficulties
with JACS codes.
Keele placed an embargo on the use of its data after The Guardian League
table was published in 2006. After reconsidering our participation in the
table Keele has decided to continue the embargo on the use of its data,
until such a time as the Guardian's review group has considered the tables
and reported.
I would be interested to hear if any other institutions are considering this
action.
Regards
Emma Kitley

Dear Colleagues,
The Guardian have finally responded (but only in part) to my earlier
queries. Note their response below.
Should we, as a sector, be concerned that the Guardian are unable
to:
* grasp the way in which institutions work,
and the relationship (or not) between JACS codes and academic cost centres;
* include all JACS codes in their analysis,
and therefore include all students in their analysis
Best wishes and in despair,
Judy

Dear Judy Evans
Let me apologise for any lack of clarity in our request for
information for the Guardian university guide tables and ask you to answer
the points below - I hope this is the last time we will have to bother you.
As in previous years please use only one Cost Centre per Guardian
subject. We only use principal JACS, not sub-JACS. JACS which we are not
using (and do not appear on the spreadsheet) are listed below. These
students will not be counted in the tables.
I would be grateful if you could return this to me by Tuesday
(February 6) so we can get the ball rolling with HESA. Thank you for your
cooperation

Review of Cost Centre Submission: University of Brighton
While conducting the necessary quality checks on the cost centre
consultation file for University of Brighton the following observations have
been made:
1 Cost Centre 41 is not used by the Guardian Tables. Please
review/adjust.
2 Only Principal Subject JACS are used when creating Guardian
Subjects. We have created an updated file (attached) for Brighton using only
the principal JACS (column D), presented alongside the originally submitted
JACS (column C) for you to review/adjust as appropriate.
3 Multiple cost centres assigned to Guardian Subjects. Note that a
single cost centre should be assigned to a single Guardian Subject. Please
review/adjust.
4 JACS codes NOT used in the Guardian Tables are: A0, A9, B0, B3,
F0, F9, H0, J7, J9, L0, L9, N7, Q2, Q4, Q5, Q9, V0, V9, W8, X2, Y0. Please
use only those available from the drop down lists.
General Statements/Guidance (applicable to all HEIs):
a Only Principal Subject JACS are used when creating Guardian
Subjects.
b Only one cost centre should be assigned to a Guardian Subject
c JACS codes NOT used in the Guardian Tables are: A0, A9, B0, B3,
F0, F9, H0, J7, J9, L0, L9, N7, Q2, Q4, Q5, Q9, V0, V9, W8, X2, Y0.
d A valid JACS code can only appear in one Guardian Subject.
