GLOBAL FORUM ON BIOETHICS IN RESEARCH (GFBR)

Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED)

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The Global Forum on Bioethics in Research (GFBR) is a global platform for the exchange of experience and expertise on health research ethics - among researchers, research policy makers, ethic specialists and the public. It aims to address current ethical issues arising from international collaborative health research.

The Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED) is an international NGO that supports low and middle income countries to develop their health research systems aiming to improve health, health equity and development through research for health. COHRED has received a grant from the European Union to host the secretariat of the GFBR -on behalf of the eight partners*- to implement a fellowship program that will support the secretariat of the GFBR.

Terms of Reference for FELLOWSHIPS at the Global Forum on Bioethics in Research

The GFBR-Secretariat is searching for one or two health/research professionals who have successfully completed an advanced training program in health research ethics. The Fellowship is structured like a 'research-assistantship': Fellows will be engaged in two main areas of activity:

1.	Providing assistance to the GFBR-Secretariat, including supporting communication and advocacy activities, producing and publishing policy papers and other documents relevant to the objectives of the Forum, and engage in preparing for fund raising activities;

	2.	Engaging in networking and professional development; location in Geneva provides the opportunity to network with international organisations active in the field of health research ethics, and with the offices of the GFBR partners located here; in addition, Fellows will be offered the opportunity to attend relevant meetings, including the annual meeting of the GFBR.

Qualifications and Competencies Required:
*	Applicants need to have a masters or equivalent degree in a health related discipline, and have successfully completed advanced training in health research ethics / bioethics; membership of an active Ethics Review Committee and research expertise will constitute a major recommendation.

ˇ	Other skills needed to function in the fellowship:
ˇ	Programme management skills
			1	Advance computer literacy
2	Experience in the conduct of survey research
3	Oral and written fluency in English is essential. Fluency in French or Spanish will be an asset.

Other specific requirements:
*	Be a resident of developing country
*	Be available to attend the GFBR annual meeting if this falls in the fellowship period
*	After the assignment, return to a home-country institution in a position relevant to bioethical governance of research. Preference will be given to persons who are current members of Research Ethics Committees and have published in the field of research ethics

Deadline for applications:
2 March 2007.
Location:
Geneva, Switzerland.
Duration:
To be negotiated between minimally 6 and maximally 12 months.

Interested candidates should send a letter of interest, a short essay on how this fellowship will benefit the candidate and the GFBR, and a detailed Curriculum Vitae, including names and contact details of three contactable referees, to Sandra Realpe ([log in to unmask]).
