Hi Bob,
The University of Derby has quite a long history of using e-assessment. In terms of purpose we currently use e-assessments for:
* diagnostic purposes (mainly skills and ESOL)
* formative (both 'practice' and tutorial type)
* summative (I assume this is what you referred to as formal?)
In addition to this there is also an increasing use of e-assessments for evaluation and research purposes.
Subject areas that use e-assessments are varied, but include the following:
- Earth Sciences (very advanced and rich assessments, in fact this is where our e-assessment practice originated)
- Biology and Forencis sciences (mainly summative exams and practice sessions relating to these)
- Psychology (exams)
- Business (These are probably our most avid users, in particular for tutorials with rich feedback)
- Computing (mainly exams and practice sessions relating to these)
- Technology (mainly computer music production, we're developing a simulation for sound engineers)
- Law (very interesting applications ranging from workplace simulatiion, peer marked essays to new developments in the area of evaluation of video recorded interviews and collaborative project enviroments).
- Health, mainly Radiography (many applications for imaging technologies using rich media)
- Skills (Mainly diagnostics for (FE) Key skills and self help on study skils and employability skills)
- Mathmatics (both formative, such as interactive Venn diagrams, or graphs, and summative)
- ESOL (Diagnostics of skills on entry, exams and in early stages of development the assessment of written text using natural language processing)
Off the top of my head that roughly covers all the main areas. If you need any more detail on any of these, please let me know, I'd be happy to elaborate.
Regards,

Subject: E-assessment in HE
Hi all,
Seeing all those replies to Sonya about Question Software I
realise that this is quite an active discussion board. I am not sure how
it sits alongside e-assessment@jiscmail, but I have just posted a
question there which I'd like to repeat here...
I have recently joined an HE institution that has not, as far as
I can see, really taken up e-assessment.
I'd like to ask a question that may seem a little trite.
Nevertheless, I'll take my chance and see what it throws up.
What subject areas are using e-assessment in HE? And is anyone
conducting formal assessment electronically?
Many thanks,
Bob Ridge-Stearn
