Criminal Intent: performance, agency, gender and the drama of mediated
crime
A call for papers for a one day conference hosted by the Media and Politics
group, De Montfort University and The BSA Media Studies Group. Wednesday
23rd May 2007
We are interested in papers which investigate the mediation of crime and
law enforcement in relation to questions of agency, gender and performance.
Fields of enquiry can include fiction and non-fiction forms.
Panel and plenary papers might consider:
How is the gendered protagonist presented in film, television and other
mediated narrative forms?
How is the existence and exercise of authority and gendered identity
represented in media narratives?
What correspondence is there between legal definitions of agency and those
we typically see represented?
Do media institutions/ audiences/ forms dictate particular version of
agency?
Do shifts in the character/ performance of agency, whether by a criminal or
law enforcer demand corresponding or counterbalancing changes in other
aspects of representation or institutional practice?
We are happy to consider other related proposals.
Please send your proposals to [log in to unmask] and /or
[log in to unmask] by 12th March 2007. Proposals should consist of a 250
word (maximum) statement, your personal and institutional details should be
on a separate sheet to allow for anonymous refereeing.
