The project outline is as below:
Three very different sources of information tell a common story about the
dispersal throughout Europe of Neolithic culture. These are: (a) Human and
animal DNA; statistical models can estimate the time to the most recent
common ancestor of any two individuals; given a larger sample they can even
estimate the past sizes of populations. (b) Archaeology, in the form of
crop remains and bones, with inexact dates provided by radiocarbon dating.
(c) Language; linguists can quantify differences between languages. Our
task is to develop an entirely new statistical procedure to allow the
pooling of these uncertain and very different data sources. We hope (a) to
shed light on the spatio-temporal details of very early population
dispersal and (b) to show that it is possible to bring together, in a
formal fashion, apparently completely different types of information. If it
can be done here, it can be done in other areas.
