Hello
I understand your point, but my original comment suggested that the list of 'approved suppliers' includes a very odd collection of organisations inc. serious hardware companies (e.g. Viglen) and VLE vendors (e.g. Fronter) - I recognise many of the other names as well btw.
I'm not sure Viglen, for example, would be at all interested in supplying and installing Moodle to meet my organisational need, then advising me on how best to use it in terms of pedagogy, data management etc.and . (Not sure of the full remit of the suppliers...)
Your suggestion of a 'portal' is great - I seem to recall conference discussions on systems to integrate a whole range of delivery systems, platforms, environments etc. in the late 1990s, but I guess we haven't quite got there yet....
I'm still not quite sure what to make of this whole affair really - I think many LAs will plough on regardless, and are probably much further advanced that Becta think/know.

But my understanding is that the list of named companies is a list of named
suppliers. There is a difference between a supplier and a product. I would
not see a problem in asking a supplier to include in their work, the supply
of Moodle.
And once again, let's be clear - we are looking at learning platforms.
Perhaps we are looking at a portal solution that enables any number of VLE's
to be plugged into it.

On an associated topic, I attended a meeting of Herefordshire schools a
few months ago at which (a) a number of VLE vendors were invited and,
basically "plugged" and (b) a senior dfes spokesperson appeared to
endorse the use of commercial, rather than open source, software. I
demo'd our Moodle site, but I have a feeling a lot of money will be
spent by the council and individual schools before they learn the
lessons most of us already have (if you'll excuse the bad English!).

I think the most striking thing about this list is the lack of an Open
Source VLE. It seems BECTA have failed to learn one of the most
important lessones from the FE experience which is that most colleages
have now moved away from commercial VLEs which were not very successful
and have started to move forward and make far more progress with Open
Source solutions.
Does anyone know if schools have to choose from this list or whether
this is just a recommendation.
