Translating Drama (Evening course)
DESCRIPTION AND RATIONALE
This short course covers and explores the practical and theoretical
aspects of different writing and text-devising practices which sit at
the heart of theatrical production, such as translation, and adaptation.
It focuses on the study and analysis of foreign texts translated into
English and produced on British stages, in relation to their linguistic,
and socio-cultural contexts. By so doing, the course aims to equip
students with practical skills to translate and adapt drama, and to
provide students with an understanding of contemporary translation
practices for the theatre.
Dates 21 February- 28 March, (6 Wednesday evening sessions)
Place Moorgate, London Metropolitan University, City campus
Languages Non language specific course (all languages welcome)

Who is it for? Translation students, Drama and Literature students,
Practising translators who want to gain skills in drama translation
Entry requirements A good command of English,
An interest in drama. Some translation experience welcome but not necessary
Course Objectives:
Introduce to practices and methods of drama translation, including
adaptation and tradaptation
Develop skills for translating/adapting dramatic texts
Gain an awareness of the cultural transfer of plays and how this affects
reception
Gain an understanding of the British theatrical industry and of the ways
translations/adaptations are commissioned
Course structure One hour lecture and one hour workshop
