Mike,
This was, in fact, the problem. Thankfully, fixing it was very easy.
I went into the spm5/src directory and ran "make ; make install".
The Makefile was very intelligently written, and gleaned all
architecture-related information from the output of uname(1).
I just received confirmation from a user that spm5 works fine now, on the
64-bit machines.
