Hello,
I've just joined the list so I hope it's not rude to post without a good
amount of lurking first :)
As part of my PhD work I've been looking at the flow of people in places
like galleries, museums and other kinds of public or semi-public spaces.
I'm interested in how designers approach designing for and managing that
flow through technological, physical and social means. A couple of simple
examples. In a theme park much thought goes into the arrangement of rides,
visitors' paths through them, queueing, etc. In museums, interactive
devices can impact visitor flow through the way that those devices
establish a relationship with the local environment, particularly in
generating spaces of interference from the use of sensor devices, etc.
I've had a look at William H. Whyte's work on the study of flow (and other
things) in city plazas, streets and the like, however I've had only a
little bit of a look at some space syntax stuff. Thus I'm interested to
know of any space syntax-related publications people here might know
of/have authored which may have particular relevance in understanding the
flow of people through public and semi-pubic spaces as well as the
management of that flow through a variety of means (as mentioned before,
technological, social and so on).
Hope that my request is relatively clear... Any help much appreciated.
Thanks.
Stuart
