Alexander,
In the UK and perhaps other countries there are non-governmental
regulatory bodies designed to encourage responsible broadcasting and
prevent mainstream broadcasting organisations from only making programmes
that appeal to the narrow tastes of the majority.
I'm not sure if or how well the regulation works. Certainly the
broadcasting output available in the UK seems (to me) to offer a wider
range of content than that in the US. It is by no means perfect, of
course, and I may only prefer it because I'm used to it. There are some
good programmes made in the US but I think I would feel more
undernourished trying to survive on a "diet" of mainstream American
broadcast content.
Probably other list members know more about this and have opinions too.
