My first response was a burst of spontaneous laughter and the feeling
of flow of pleasure. I 'recognised the image' as one I'd lived
through with my daughter Rebecca and her friend Emily. Early one
morning I woke up thinking I could hear the sound of crisps
crackling. I got up, followed the sound downstairs to find that the
two girls had emptied the polystyrene beads out of three bean bags
and were rolling around in the resultant chaos with great glee! I
left the room to let my laugher explode before the 2 hour cleaning up
operation!.
Looking at the boy's face and responding to his gaze I feel his trust
and delight. I 'know' that as I respond to the image I am responding
to a flow of life-affirming pleasure I sense he is feeling and
expressing through his whole body. I look at the second figure and
find it more difficult to connect with what is being felt and
expressed. I look at the picture as a whole and feel that I 'know'
from personal experience the material context. I feel confident that
the children are living without the constraints of poverty. If I knew
that the photograph was authentic I'd feel confident in my feeling
that a loving eye of the photographer was part of the expression of
life-affirming energy and pleasure. What a great image to start my
day. Many thanks Susie.
Love Jack.
