In which film did Moe do a Hitler number? This preceded Chaplin's Adolf
Hinkel?
The Stooges remain one of my guilty pleasures. That would be like the
Pope attending porno film festivals in mufti or grand mufti. I got into
the Stooges when I was still in high school. How do you love the
Stooges and the far more suble Ernie Kovacs? There was more than one of me.
As a latchkey kid I'd come home to an empty house, put on the tube, and
there they were, being entirely outrageous and cracking me up. And
racist. You can't do this anymore. In one of them, Curly finds a magic
lamp. He rubs it and a gigantic black man appears stripped to the
waist, wearing harem pants, and topped with a turban. "May Ah serves
you, Mastah?" he asks. "Who are YOU!?" cries Curly. "I am the Genii of
the Lamp!" "Oooooooohhhhh! Okay, Amos, bring me a sandwich." Even
then I was gaping. The station in NYC got away with showing this stuff
in 1960-61. Yes, we still said "Negro" but not "Amos" after the cabbie
in "Amos and Andy." To this day, old Stooges films can bring me to
hysteria. Them...and Laurel & Hardy demolishing a man's automobile, the
purest comedy of destruction I can imagine.
