Hi Zoë,

I have watched people not get to present at all, not get to present for
their full timeslot, or not present quite what they wanted to because the
software or machinery did not work at all or only sort of worked. Off hand
I can think of 9 presentations I have witnessed that have been ruined due to
failed equipment. Several happened at the first ICQI. Some happened in
Montreal in the performance session specifically. A candidate for an
assistant professor position at my institution was doing a job talk for us
and his equipment did not work. He was so agitated and nervous. What he
really needed to do was relax and "talk to us" about his work, show us that
he was adaptable. Over dependence on the tech can be a problem, but I am
not anti-tech. If I were, I could not talk to you! ;)

Thanks for asking,
