Good afternoon everyone and a Happy New Year,

Those at last month's LMLAG meeting heard that there is to be a meeting
at
NMM on 31st January at which Kevin Sontag (see below) would like to
consult museum people - librarians, archivists and curators - about
RFID
needs, with special reference to the question of tagging. His company
had a stand at the recent Cilip RFID conference which is where Jill
Terrell and I met him (also Jane Smith of the Natural History Museum).

Jill has kindly found a room for the meeting at NMM.

If you, or other collections people at your museum are interested in
attending, please contact Kevin whose details are below. Also, he'd
be
grateful if you would pass these details to other appropriate
colleagues.

Please note that this is not an LMLAG meeting,

Best regards,

Richard

Here's the invitation.................

INVITATION TO AN RFID IN MUSEUMS FORUM

Increasingly, Libraries are adopting RFID technology as a means to
identify and secure their stock. In turn, the products available in
this area are developing and maturing to help meet these needs.

For museums and archives, as well as some libraries, tagging unusual,
rare and valuable objects and documents with standard adhesive labels
presents problems and may simply not be an option.

We would like to confer with representatives from museums in order to
fully understand the requirement within this sector. If you believe
RFID may be of benefit to you, but are concerned about the particular
difficulties that tagging will have for your collections then we would
like to talk to you. We will be holding a get together on Wednesday
31st January which the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich have
kindly
agreed to host.

From the open discussions that take place on that day, we hope to
develop realistic and relevant RFID solutions to meet museum needs.
While we wish that such solutions would be adopted in due course by
some
of the attendees, there is of course no obligation on anyone to
purchase
any product or service.
We envisage the meeting will start mid-morning through to early
afternoon with lunch and coffees provided.

If you are interested in attending, then please contact us with your
details. Depending upon the level of interest, we may have to
restrict
places on a first come first served basis, or we may choose to run a
second event. You will be advised of all the necessary further
details
well in advance of the event.
