Visiting Professorial Lecture
23rd January 2007, King's College, London, Franklin-Wilkins Building G73 17.00 - 18.30
Nurses, midwives and consent
The aim of this lecture is to promote discussion about the place of consent in nursing and midwifery. Is informed consent perhaps overly based on gendered medico-legal concepts of formal contract, distance and defensiveness? How necessary, appropriate and helpful are these concepts to the frequently intimate, informal contact between nurses and midwives and the people they care for? Should nurses and midwives take more or less account of consent procedures and protections than they do at present? I will discuss the pros and cons of formal consent and the relevance and feasibility of less formal approaches.
Professor Priscilla Alderson is a visiting Professor in the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery and a Professor of Childhood Studies at the Social Science Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of London where she is co-director of Childhood Research and Policy Centre. Her research interests include Children's rights, agency and wisdom; citizenship and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989; children with chronic illness or disability; children's views and experiences of health, education and legal services; and methods and ethics of research with children.
