Dear All,
(Passed on from another list, with permission)
Those of you with an interest in metadata may like to look at a new
briefing, "Metadata's many meanings and uses", reviewing the history and
current state of play on the topic from Conrad Taylor, the Chairperson of
the British Computer Society Electronic Publishing special interest group.
http://www.ideography.co.uk/briefings/
The 21 page briefing covers the etymology and developing use of the term
over the last 20 years before looking at some particular applications -
image metadata and metadata embedded in text files.
Emerging standards such as RDF and XMP are also covered and there are many
references to further sources of information.
Gordon.
