Posted to the lis-rarebooks list as well as to Fredrica Axelsson, for
general interest:
Dear Fredrica
You should certainly look at the two volumes of 'British Librarianship and
Information Work' (ed. J.H. Bowman) covering 1991-2000 and 2001-2005 -
published by Ashgate, 2006 and 2007; there are very useful chapters on rare
book librarianship and historical bibliography, by David Pearson (1991-2000)
and by Karen Attar (2001-2005). Both chapters have extensive references to
the published literature, including electronic sources. Also relevant is a
chapter by B.C. Bloomfield on 'Rare-book libraries and the growth of
humanities scholarship', in the 'Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain
and Ireland', vol. 3 (ed. Alistair Black and Peter Hoare), published Nov.
2006, though the references are not completely up to date owing to the
author's death in 2002; and CHLBI also includes chapters on various aspects
of professional growth.
And of course the CILIP Rare Books & Special Collections Group's Newsletter
is a continuing source of up-to-date information and ideas.
Regards
Peter Hoare

Subject: Literature suggestions
Dear all,
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Brighton, doing a Library
and Information Studies degree. I am conducting my final year research
project into the areas of the education and training for rare books
professionals, collection management issues, and the marketing and promotion
of rare books collections.
At the moment I am having difficulties obtaining current published
literature in the areas in question. Most, if not all, the literature I have
acquired so far is pre-1996, and I am in need of the more current published
works on these subjects.
Due to the lack of success in my search, I am now sending out a question to
anyone familiar in these areas to give me hints, tips and suggestions of any
authors who have written about rare books collections after 1996.
All suggestions will be most welcome, and if there is any interest in
knowing more about my research project do not hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks,
Fredrica Axelsson
