SUPPORTING CHILDREN'S LEARNING THROUGH PUBLIC LIBRARIES
27 February 2007, London
Study support has always been a vital feature of public library provision for children and young people, whether in the form of homework help, class visits or everyday enquiry work. Yet many library staff have not been trained and lack confidence in delivering these key services. Moreover changes to the education system, and indeed to children's lives and to libraries themselves, may not be reflected sufficiently in their structure, content, presentation and promotion.
Information literacy is now a key element in literacy teaching. We hear a great deal about learning styles and individualised learning. What do these terms mean, and what are their implications for libraries?
In an ever-changing climate, how can children's learning be supported effectively?
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
Participants will gain more understanding of how children learn and current educational policies and practices, and will explore a wide range of strategies for fostering children's learning through the library.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
· considered the role of the library in supporting children's learning
· examined models for engaging children in learning
· analysed ways to encourage effective information and library skills
· identified methods for enhancing class visits and homework provision
· shared ideas on library-school liaison
· developed confidence in supporting children and their parents and carers
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Children's librarians, other public library staff.
