1. [Policy] Social Marketing Works! Leaflet for the NHS

The National Social Marketing Centre Bulletin have published their latest
version of the Social Marketing Works! leaflet, in this case specifically
geared to NHS staff, with a foreword by Fiona Adshead, the Deputy Chief

2. [Research] 116 Million Consumers Online for Health; Multi-Channel
Marketing Opportunities Surge (US)

According to Manhattan Research, 116 million U.S. adults report using the
Internet for health information in 2006 – an increase of 75 million compared
to five years ago. The research also indicates a pronounced increase in
reliance on the Internet for healthcare information and decision support
among today’s empowered and engaged health consumers, many of whom are
shouldering an increasing responsibility for their healthcare choices

3. [Accessibility] Reaching people with cancer from black and minority
ethnic communities

Cancerbackup is committed to increasing access to cancer information and
support for people from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities.
Currently there are over 1 million people in the UK whose first language is

people with cancer from black and minority ethnic communities.

4. [Medicines] Invitation to provide information on user testing of Patient
Information Leaflets (PILs) for medicines

Eighteen months since the requirement for all PILs to be user tested was
introduced, the MHRA and Commission on Human Medicines Expert Advisory Group
on Patient Information (CHM PIEAG) plan to review the experiences of user
testing companies to date, in order to share learning and promote best
practice. The letter below, inviting PIL user testing companies to share
their experiences, was sent out on 19 December. Responses should be e-mailed
to [log in to unmask] by 11 January 2007.

5. [Design/ Medicines] A new code of practice for the design of medicine
packs has been introduced by the Proprietary Association of Great Britain

6. [Policy] Website checks two-day GP target

An MP has set up a website for people to report problems getting
appointments with their GPs within the 48-hour national target. Grant
Shapps, Conservative MP for Welwyn Hatfield, is convinced many are not seen
quickly - and that official statistics do not reflect this. Since its launch
the website - www.48hourgp.com - has received dozens of complaints.

7. [Research] Welsh source health information online

A survey, commissioned by Informing Healthcare, reveals that four out of
five (78%) adults in Wales have access to the internet; and that two thirds
(64%) source health information online. Of those who do not have access to
the internet - at home, at work or elsewhere – a quarter (24%) claim that
they ask friends and family to use the internet to search for health
information on their behalf.

8. [Design] Food labelling campaign launched

Some of the UK's biggest food manufacturers are launching a £4m campaign to
promote nutritional labels. The labels show percentages of guideline daily
amounts (GDA) of sugar, salt, fat and calories in each serving. Other firms
use red, amber and green labels - where green is good and red warns not to
consume too much - approved by the Food Standards Agency.

Diabetes UK gave their backing to the traffic light system, saying it was
the "quickest and easiest" way for consumers to know what their food
contained.
