Hello all,
We have a fairly complete list of known war memorials on our county HER taken from a variety of sources such as the UKNIWM and also from map sources etc. I got a bit over-enthusiastic in 2005 due to it being the 50 year anniversary of the end of WWII. In fact I produced a rather nice leaflet which can be downloaded from http://www.somerset.gov.uk/somerset/cultureheritage/heritage/projects/warmemorials/ by those interested!
However memorials were erected not only to honour the dead but also to give thanks for safe return and the end of hostilities and often cover more than one conflict and without more details it is not always easy to establish the date and purpose of the memorial. The UKNIWM is also not complete and is compiled by a volunteer force so the level of detail, and accuracy, of each record may vary considerably. It is also not so uncommon for such memorials to have inaccuracies, we have all read of campaigns to add/remove names that should or shouldn't be included. So, without a site visit, the presence of a war memeorial may not be enough to say a village is or is not a 'Thankful' one!
I really am more interested in roadside signs in this instance to see if a precedent has been set.
Many thanks for all the replies (anyone would think it was nearly Friday!)
