According to W. StC. Baddeley, Herefordshire Place-names (Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, 39, 87-200 (1916), online at www.bgas.org.uk), Syferwast is a place-name in Little Cowarne. However, I cannot find it on any map. We more usually hear the name as that of a family which flourished in the 13 and 14C, said to be lords of Freefolk, Hampshire.
Is this name originally a place-name? If so, what is its origin?
