Larry
I am very shocked to hear you have signed to petition when you have always
campaigned for 'Autism' and of course 'NeuroDiversity' to be accepted a
'cultural-indentity' and protected with basic human rights and civil
liberities.
As Andy has stated from S55; Victimisation forum that I moderate:-
"Sadly, "legislation relating to..." doesn't necessarily mean "rights
for...", it may also mean imposition of "treatment" and so on. The rather
disturbingly names "Combatting Autism Act" in America "says the director of
the National Institutes of Health will coordinate research into "the cause
(including possible environmental causes) ... and treatment of autism
spectrum disorder."" Here's a piece from UPI:
http://www.upi.com/ConsumerHealthDaily/view.php?StoryID=20070109-033800-9016r
It's about "curing" autism treated as a "disease", rather than ensuring
rights for autistic people.
I'd imagine the situation in Canada is similar; there's been a big campaign
for a "right" of autistics to receive "behaviour therapy" (taught
normalisation), though the resultant court and political processes have also
involved a voice for equality campaigners. This site is Canadian based:
