8th Annual Conference of the European Sociological Association: Conflict, Citizenship and Civil Society, Glasgow, 3rd - 6th September, 2007
Research Stream: Disability, Citizenship and Uncivil Society
Disability discourse has taken shape and prospered in the spaces where academics and activists meet and, at times, collide. Disability Studies may not be the theoretical expression of the Disabled People's Movement but engagement with the movement and the disability rights agenda has marked the academic approach to disability in fundamental ways. Anti-Discrimination Legislation over the past 15 years in advanced capitalist countries signals a partial absorption of the question of disability into the liberal rights agenda and the growing theoretical complexity of disability studies and the impact of a heightened sense of difference within the disability movement and amongst disabled people suggest that a re-appraisal of disability as both movement and idea is apposite and timely. The 'last civil rights movement' seems to have reached a crucial stage in its development. Yet formal advance in claims to citizenship do not necessarily mitigate the lived experience of oppression and exclusion or the mundane incivilities and ontological violations that are part of disabled people's everyday lives. This open call for papers invites theoretical and empirical contributions to the question of recognition and misrecognition as it is experienced by disabled people as they negotiate with and resist contemporary forms of ableism.
