I understood HESA data was taken from self declaration on the UCAS form
leading to all sorts of inaccuracies. I'm told we can't "delete"
students who refuse to supply proof of dyslexia because it upsets the
conformation between HESA and UCAS data.

Any comments??

There are other dimensions too. Overseas students who come from
Countries where Dyslexia is not necessarily recognised. A quote
recently made to me was that we are sadly lacking in this Country of
Mandarin speaking Educational Psychologists for example - and I would
agree.

Indeed the HESA statistics are shown on the site Paddy and Claire quote;
but, forgive me if I am stating the obvious, it may be very easy to jump
to wildly inaccurate conclusions by using these figures inappropriately,
for lots of reasons:

	1) The HESA statistics are collated from figures supplied by
individual universities. There is no need for any students with dyslexia
to make themselves known to their universities if they do not want to do
so. The HESA figures may therefore be underestimates.

	2) As far as I am aware there is no check, by HESA or anyone
else, on whether different universities use comparable definitions of
dyslexia.

	3) My opinion is that different educational psychologists are
quite likely to come to different conclusions in assessing the same
student. There is no definition of dyslexia which can be used to give
predictable conclusions from assessments. Even if there were, it would
take a long time for it to be universally applied.

	4) I have no experience myself of dyslexia assessment in prisons
or through the probation service, but I suspect that criteria used in
those fields may be significantly different from criteria used in HEIs.
I have absolutely no evidence, but I wonder whether there is a confusion
between illiteracy and dyslexia in this area.

I'd be glad to receive comments on those points.

Best wishes,

Robert
