The nvidia drivers from the NVIDIA website work fine for me. Just be sure
to modify your X configuration file as documented by using the correct
driver and commenting out what they tell you. Sorry I can give you
specifics... I am not at my linux box. Also if you want to remove the
NVIDIA software, the install script has an uninstall flag so not nightmarish
at all.
