Edmund,
Have you been up to your old tricks watching Shakespeare through Fernand Braudel again? The character who stays in my mind is Antonio - a rather different "middle person" to silly-stockinged Malvolio, a saviour from the sea & devoted friend; is he caught in the same middle? No, because he doesn't want, or his will is to another, unlike the other would-be lovers. But what kind of "sea-captain" was he, what kind of fighting ship (usually glossed as "pirate")? Isn't it more one of those flat-bottomed barges which could get close to land & harry shipping along the coasts and in harbours? When in mythical & counter-textual mood, you could make him into a pirate messiah.
